The Sun crossed into the second ten-day slice of Libra at about a quarter to six this morning, UK time. From today, Saturday 3 October, until 12 October, the sky belongs to the Three of Swords. On 13 October the third slice of Libra opens with the Four of Swords.
Last night the Chariot asked you to steer before the cut, so that today’s cut would be a road you chose. The truce that opened on 23 September, when the Two of Swords held two blades still and a rose bloomed where they crossed, ran out at midnight. This is the cut.
The Reading
In the older naming used on this calendar, the Three of Swords is called Sorrow, and the planet that rules it is Saturn in Libra. Saturn is the planet of limits, time, weight and consequences. Libra is the sign of the scales. Saturn is traditionally said to be exalted in Libra, which is a plain way of saying the strict planet does its best work in the fair sign. The scales tip. Something has to be settled. Settling has a cost, and Saturn collects it.
These ten days are the chapter where the weighing ends and something gets settled. The Two of Swords kept two blades still. A rose grew where they crossed, and that rose was the comfort of not choosing. People can live for months inside a stalemate and call the stillness kindness. The third sword comes down the middle. The petals fall. The comfort of the unresolved thing ends when the third blade moves. What gets cut is the stalemate, and stalemates have people living in them.
Maybe yours shows a red heart pierced by three swords, grey sky, rain falling. Maybe three white hands reach out of clouds, each holding a sword upright, and the central sword has struck apart the two that were crossed in the Two of Swords, cutting through the five-petalled rose that grew where those blades met. The petals are falling. The rose gives off no light now. The marks of Saturn and Libra sit above and below the central sword. Either way, three blades, one thing at the centre that has been cut, and no one pretending otherwise. The rose that lit the truce is the thing the third sword finds.
The truth you have been weighing usually arrives in instalments. The first cut is the sentence you have been rehearsing and not saying, spoken out loud to the person it concerns. The second is whatever follows once it has been said: a changed plan, a quieter house, an arrangement that no longer holds. The third is the day after, when no one is performing the conversation any more and the feeling is simply there. Give each its own day. Saturn works in order. The cut is honest. It is the decision Justice asked for on 25 September, arriving with its bill. Sorrow, in this older sense, is the clean grief of a fair outcome.
The heart is the brightest thing in the picture. Air season has been very good at talking. These ten days ask you to let the feeling be the loudest thing for once. Acknowledge the pain, and leave it in the open. You do not have to manage the feeling into something useful this week. If nothing is cutting this fortnight, something in your life has already been cut and is still being treated as a truce.
The new moon in Libra falls on Saturday 10 October, inside this stretch. The dark-sky reset comes a week in, so the cut has somewhere to go.
One Practical Thing for the Days Ahead
Name the rose. Write down the comfortable stalemate you have been living in, the thing that stays pleasant only because it is unresolved. Then write the three cuts it would take to end it: the saying, the consequence, the quiet. Pick a date for the first one before the new moon on the 10th, and treat that date as an appointment you keep. The saying is the only cut you schedule now. Leave the consequence and the quiet for later days. Saturn works in order.
Why the Three of Swords, Why Now?
The year splits into thirty-six slices of about ten days. These slices are called decans. Each decan has one minor arcana card assigned to it by the calendar, one of the numbered suit cards. Libra’s second decan belongs to the Three of Swords, Saturn in Libra, the old title Sorrow. The Three of Swords sits on these days because the calendar places it here. You can read more on the Three of Swords, and the wider map of the year sits on the tarot calendar.
The swords took the sky at the equinox on 23 September. The first slice held a truce, and that truce expired at midnight. The card for these days is the one that makes the cut.
Monday 5 October brings the earth signs’ reading, on love and connection. Wednesday 7 October brings the air signs’ reading, on money and security. The new moon on the 10th sits in the middle of these ten days, a dark sky for whatever the first cut has opened.
The cut can be clean, and the heart is still the living thing in the picture.
