Friday belongs to the fire signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. This week’s subject is growth and shadow work. We are a week into the Three of Swords decan of Libra, which runs from 3 to 12 October. The Golden Dawn title for that card is Sorrow. Its ruler is Saturn in Libra: the cut that follows the weighing. The decan post asked everyone to name the comfortable stalemate and book the first honest saying before the new moon. That decan ends on Monday. For fire signs the honest talk this week may be the one you have with yourself.

The Card: The Devil

The card drawn for the fire signs this week is The Devil, Major Arcana XV. In the Golden Dawn system it belongs to the Hebrew letter Ayin, to Capricorn, and to the element of Earth. An earth card for fire signs, chosen on purpose. The Devil is about what holds still and repeats. That is the thing fire least expects to find in itself. The chains you forget you chose. Back in August the fire signs’ shadow reading was the Five of Swords, inside the Seven of Wands decan: fire defends beautifully, and the shadow was the part that hopes something needs defending soon. The advice then was to win less and keep more. This is the second shadow-work reading.

Maybe yours shows a horned, bat-winged figure crouched on a stone block. A five-pointed star sits upside down on its forehead. One hand is raised and a torch points downward in the other. Below, a man and a woman with small horns and tails are loosely chained by the neck to the block. Maybe it shows a horned devil on a pedestal, the same upside-down star, a chained man and woman, a dark cave behind. Across every version the shared picture is a big figure on a block, two people chained beneath it, and chains loose enough to slip. The pair are the same two figures from The Lovers, drawn as what a bond becomes when nobody is paying attention. The chains are slack enough to lift off.

Fire’s shadow is the thing it does on repeat while believing it is free to choose. The late order, the comeback that always gets sent, the new start that is the same start. Fire signs think of themselves as the free ones. The Devil shows the loop. The torch pointing down is fire’s own element held the wrong way. It lights only the ground under its feet. The habit uses the same energy a person is proud of. The card’s message is a kind one. Noticing is the key, and the chains are loose. Looking straight at the thing weakens it. The power the thing has is kept up by agreement. The agreement can be withdrawn. Growth here is one honest look. See the loop once, clearly, and the loop loses most of its hold. No campaign and no dramatic quitting. Fire turns quitting into another blaze. Capricorn, the sign on this card, is patient and does the same thing every day. That is also what the shadow does. The way out uses the same patience: one small daily refusal. Inside this Three of Swords week the honest talk may be with yourself. Name the agreement you have been keeping with the habit, out loud, and the chain gets lighter.

Aries, the fight you keep picking because it feels like aliveness: you picked it last month too. Notice the pattern and skip one round. Leo, the audience you keep performing for, long after they stopped watching: the chain is the applause you are still waiting for. Sagittarius, the next trip, course, plan or escape that always arrives just as something at home needs facing: the loop is leaving. Stay for one difficult evening.

One Practical Thing for the Week

Write one chain inventory before the weekend. Name one thing you do on repeat and still call a choice: the late reply that always goes, the next plan that arrives the moment something at home needs facing, the drink after the argument. Next to it write what it gives you, warmth or relief or the feeling of being free. Then, once this week, when the moment comes, do the thing you would do if the chain were off, and notice that nothing held you. Skip one round and watch. Do not start a new regime. Set tomorrow’s new moon as the night to write the one-line intention that follows from what you saw.

There’s more on the card in our Devil card meaning. Tomorrow, Saturday 10 October, is the new moon in Libra, the intention reading. Monday 12 October is the water signs’ reading, on creativity and joy, and the last day of the Three of Swords decan. The chain is loose. Skip one round and see what stays.
