The new moon arrived in the small hours of this morning, and it lands in Virgo. No eclipse this time. The last two moons on this calendar came with shadows and drama attached, so here is the ordinary version at last: a properly dark sky, a quiet reset, and the month’s best night for planting an intention. There’s good timing in it too. Today is the final day of the Nine of Pentacles decan, the chapter about enjoying what you’ve built. It closes tonight on the traditional night for deciding what to build next. Tomorrow the wheel turns. Tonight you choose.

The Reading: Fresh Starts, Virgo Style

Every sign hosts the new moon differently, and Virgo hosts it like Virgo. This is a poor night for grand reinventions, the new-me declarations that arrive in a blaze and die by Thursday. Virgo doesn’t build that way. A Virgo intention is small, specific and repeatable: drink the water, walk the ten minutes, write the hundred words, make the bed. It looks humble next to the big resolutions, and it wins, because the season we’re in has been teaching one lesson since August: good things come from reps. Set the intention you can actually keep on a bad Tuesday. That’s the one the dark moon wants.

The Card: The Hermit

The card drawn for tonight is The Hermit, Virgo’s own major, and the timing does half the reading for us.

The image barely changes across decks. An old traveller alone on a dark mountain, and in one raised hand, a lantern with a star shining inside it. Look at what the picture gives him. He has no torch-bearers, no crowd, no map. What he has is his own light, and it reaches exactly far enough for the next step. That’s the whole teaching on a moonless night: when the sky goes dark, you find out that you carry a light of your own, and it was never meant to show you the whole road. One step is enough. Then the light moves with you, and the next step appears.

For intentions, the Hermit adds one strict rule: the light has to be yours. An intention borrowed from someone else’s life, the goal that photographs well, the ambition your family would clap for, won’t survive the dark stretch of the month. Ask the Hermit’s question instead: what would I want if nobody ever found out I wanted it? Start there. We wrote a full deep-dive on this card recently, and its short version fits tonight: solitude with a return ticket. Go inward long enough to hear yourself, then come back and act.

This moon touches four signs hardest, so a line for each. Virgo, the moon is in your sign, so this is your new year: set one intention for the person you are, and let the flawless version of you sit this one out. Pisces, you did the releasing at the eclipse two weeks ago: the space you cleared is ready now, so plant one thing in it. Gemini, the lantern lights one step at a time, and seventeen intentions is how you end up keeping none: pick one, out loud. Sagittarius, choose the aim that needs nobody’s applause, the one you’d still want on a mountain with no signal.

One Practical Thing for Tonight

Write one lantern-sized intention before bed. One sentence, present tense, and small enough that a bad Tuesday can’t kill it. “I walk after lunch” beats “I get fit”. “I write a hundred words” beats “I write the book”. Then give it the Virgo test: could you do it tomorrow in under fifteen minutes? If yes, it’s the right size. Keep it somewhere you’ll see it, and let tomorrow’s new decan, the Ten of Pentacles, tell you why the small rep matters: little things kept daily are how anything lasting gets built.

There’s more on the drawn card in our Hermit card meaning, and the whole system lives on the tarot calendar. The wheel turns tomorrow, when the Ten of Pentacles closes the pentacles’ story, and the earth signs are up on Monday. Tonight: dark sky, your own lantern, one small true thing.
