Eclipse New Moon in Leo and the Seven of Wands Decan (12 August 2026)

A total solar eclipse new moon in Leo and the start of the Seven of Wands decan, both in one evening: a reading for Leo, Aquarius, Taurus and Scorpio, and for the ten days from 12 to 22 August.

The sky is doing two things tonight, and either one alone would headline a normal month. Just before six this evening the sun crosses into the Leo III decan, handing the next ten days to the Seven of Wands. Within the hour, the new moon arrives, and it arrives as a total solar eclipse, the moon walking straight across the face of the sun. Totality runs along a line from Greenland through Iceland to northern Spain; from the UK it’s a deep partial, the evening light going strange while the sky decides something. If you’re going out to watch, use proper eclipse glasses, and if you’re staying in, this page is the other way to look at it.

These two events are one story, and we’ll read them in order: what the eclipse plants, the decan defends.

The Eclipse Reading: New Moon in Leo

The Strength tarot card: a woman in white gently closing the mouth of a lion, an infinity symbol above her head, the tarot card of power held softly
Strength, drawn for the eclipse

A new moon is the month’s quiet reset, the traditional night for planting intentions. An eclipse is a new moon with the volume turned all the way up: the door doesn’t just open, it opens once, dramatically, and the old readers treated what you begin under one as carrying further than usual. This one lands in Leo, the sign of the heart, the stage and the name, so the intention it favours runs deeper than a tidy resolution: who are you, actually, when you stop performing?

The card drawn for the eclipse is Strength, and it’s hard to imagine a better one. However your deck shows it, a figure calms a lion without a weapon, usually with bare hands and no visible effort. Leo’s own beast, handled with gentleness. That’s the instruction for tonight’s intention: don’t set a goal that needs you to bully yourself into a new shape. Set the one that needs you to stop wrestling yourself and start steadying yourself. The lion isn’t defeated in that card. It’s befriended, and it stays a lion.

This moon touches four signs hardest, so a line for each. Leo, the eclipse is in your sign and the intention is yours to name first: who are you building, now that the applause of the last decan has died down? Aquarius, you sit directly opposite, and your work is release: put down one role other people cast you in, however well you play it. Taurus, the square asks you to move something you’ve been calling stability that’s really just furniture you’re used to. Scorpio, the other square: let one thing end tonight without an autopsy, because the space it leaves is the point.

The Decan Reading: Seven of Wands

And here’s why this eclipse comes with a bodyguard.

From tonight until 22 August the calendar assigns the sky to the Seven of Wands, the card the old magicians titled “Valour”, ruled by Mars in Leo. Whichever deck you hold, the image is one wand held firm while six come against it: high ground, one against many, flames where they cross. After the Five’s scrap and the Six’s parade, the wands finish their story the honest way, because anything you win and celebrate will, eventually, need defending. Visibility attracts challengers. That’s not a flaw in the plan. It’s the tax on having one.

So the Seven’s message for the collective is simple: hold. The idea you funded, the boundary you set, the credit you finally claimed, the intention you plant tonight, all of it will be tested inside these ten days, usually within the first three, usually by something small and confident. The card promises one thing and it’s enough: the defender on the high ground wins if they don’t come down to argue on every challenger’s terms. Pick what’s worth defending, and defend that.

Put the two readings together and you get the whole shape of the fortnight: plant gently, guard firmly. Strength chooses the intention; the Seven of Wands keeps it alive past Friday.

One Practical Thing for Tonight

Write one intention before you sleep, a single sentence in the present tense, the Strength kind rather than the drill-sergeant kind. Then, underneath it, answer the Seven of Wands question: what is the first thing that will test this, and what will I do when it does? Name the meeting, the mood, the person, the habit. An intention with a named defence survives the week. An intention without one is a wish, and eclipses are too rare to spend on wishes.

There’s more on both cards in our Strength card meaning and Seven of Wands card meaning, and the whole system is laid out on the tarot calendar. The fire signs are back on Friday, and the wheel next turns on 23 August, when Virgo season opens with the Eight of Pentacles. Tonight: watch the sky if you can, plant one true thing, and stand where you plant it.
