The Fool
The leap before the look.
The Journey
The Fool is where everything begins and in many ways, where everything ends. He stands at the very edge of a cliff, blissfully unaware of the drop below, one foot already lifted into the unknown. He is not reckless so much as he is open: carrying almost nothing, unburdened by what has come before. Every soul in the Major Arcana starts as The Fool. This is the card of the original moment before experience shapes us pure potential, infinite possibility, and the terrifying, wonderful courage it takes to simply begin.
Meaning in a Reading
The Fool signals a new chapter sometimes dramatic, sometimes quietly internal. It asks you to trust the leap even when you cannot see where you will land. In readings it often marks genuine fresh starts: a new relationship, a career change, a creative project, or a spiritual awakening. The Fool does not promise success; it promises aliveness. When reversed, it can indicate recklessness, avoidance of responsibility, or a journey being delayed because fear has dressed itself up as caution.
Symbolism
The white sun behind The Fool represents pure consciousness not yet filtered by experience. The small dog nipping at his heels is worldly wisdom trying and mostly failing to warn him. The white rose he holds is innocence; the bag on his staff holds everything he needs, though he does not know it yet. The cliff edge is not a danger sign but an invitation: the unknown is not something to fear, it is something to step into.
